6 REASONS SOCIAL SECURITY DENIES CLAIMS

Social Security denies disability claims left and right, for many reasons. Here are 6 major reasons that disability claims get denied:

  1. You were still working when the application was filed. This is an automatic, Step 1 denial because claimants cannot work and receive SSDI benefits at the same time.

  2. You are still able to perform some kind of work. Being unable to perform your present or most recent job is not a disability in most cases. If there are other types of work you can still do, the claim will be denied.

  3. Mistakes on the application. The application is long and tedious. Sometimes information is omitted that causes a denial. In my experience, few people fill out the application correctly.

  4. The claimant is not following medical advice. If you are off your medications or not following up regularly with your doctor, your claim may be denied.

  5. Inadequate medical evidence causes many denials. Social Security examiners must be able to verify your severe medical conditions with your doctor(s). Doctors must verify the nature, longevity and severity of your medical conditions. These conditions must cause severe limitations in your ability to function at work-like activity. At least one of your severe conditions must have lasted for at least 12 straight months, or be expected to last for at least 12 straight months, or to end in death.

  6. You cannot be reached. If you fail to notify Social Security of changes in your address and telephone number, it may result in denial. Notifying the Post Office of a change of address is not enough. The local Social Security office where your claim was filed must also be notified. Social Security will not process disability claims for persons whose location or address is unknown. When mail starts being returned to Social Security, it creates problems.
