The average Social Security Disability payment in Alabama is $1,171 per month. There are now 251,500 Alabamians on disability.

Each person's benefit is different, based on age, length of time worked and average earnings. The more FICA withholding tax an individual has paid in, the more the benefit will be.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is not meant to replace all-- or even most--of a worker's wages. It is designed to help provide basic necessities of living. I often speak to persons who are surprised at the "hit" they will take when they stop working and go on disability.

How difficult is it to get SSDI benefits in Alabama? It depends on the individual's age, medical conditions and documentation. Only about one-third (33%) of claims are approved initially (by filing an application). Two-thirds will require at least one and probably two appeals.

Here's the process most Alabamians go through to get disability benefits:

1. Apply. The application is rigorous and time consuming.

2. Ask for "Reconsideration." This is the first stage of appeal if you are denied.

3. Ask for a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge if not approved at "Reconsideration."

Most cases in Alabama will require appearing before a judge.
