AVOID THIS SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER SCAM

Nearly a million times a day a scammer calls an American citizen with a "problem" concerning their Social Security number. The caller will usually say that there has been some suspicious activity on your Social Security number. Or they may give some other reason for "verifying" your number. Their goal: to steal your SSN and use it to defraud you out of money.

These calls are NEVER from the Social Security Administration. Think about it: Social Security originated and issued your Social Security Number (SSN) and they KNOW your number. They will never call you to verify the number.

If you originate a call to the Social Security office on business, they will ask for your SSN, of course. But Social Security employees never call you out of the blue to verify your SSN.

Social Security numbers are vital to steal identity. Say someone wants to open a credit account or buy an expensive item in your name. They will need your Social Security number. Scammers have many ways of trying to get your number from you. Don't give it out.

Be extremely careful about giving your Social Security number over the phone. Once your number has been stolen it's extremely difficult to repair the damage. Guard your personal identity information carefully. This includes your Social Security Number, which is confidential.
