Yes, veterans may also qualify for Social Security disability benefits in addition to any VA benefits. Here are some facts about SSDI benefits for veterans:
You must apply before your SSDI insurance expires under Title II of the Social Security Act. Generally, your insured status with Social Security expires within 5 years after your discharge, OR within 5 years after you stop working at other civilian employment.
2. You must make a separate application through the Social Security Administration; SSDI benefits are not automatic just because you receive VA disability benefits.
3. You must meet all of Social Security's rules for disability benefits under Title II of the Social Security Act. Social Security's rules are much different than the VA rules.
4. You must not be currently working at substantial gainful employment at the time you apply for SSDI benefits. Your VA retirement and/or disability benefits will not count against you.
5. Most veterans use the professional services of a Social Security advocate or lawyer to navigate the system and prove eligibility for benefits.
