If you change attorneys does your Social Security case "start over"?

No. Changing attorneys will NOT cause your disability claim or appeal to "start over." The new attorney will simply pick up representation of your existing claim and carry it to the finish line. There is no delay in the case at all.

For example, if your attorney retires or dies while your claim is pending, you may appoint a new attorney of your choice without setting back your claim or appeal. The new attorney picks up where the former attorney left off, causing no delays or setbacks.

All of your Social Security documents, including medical evidence previously submitted by your former attorney, remains in your electronic folder at Social Security. It doesn't go away. Your new attorney simply logs into this folder and gets access to all the information the former attorney had previously submitted.
