Will Social Security pay a disability benefit for thyroid cancer?

Social Security evaluates thyroid cancer under Listing 13.09 in the Blue Book. Here are the requirements to meet a Listing for thyroid cancer:

  1. You have a diagnosis of anaplastic carcinoma, also called undiffereniated carcinoma. This is the most aggressive form of thyroid cancer and it effects only 2 to 3 percent of all thyroid cancer patients, so it is very rare. --OR

  2. Carcinoma with metastases (spread) beyond the regional lymph nodes which is progressive despite radioactive iodine therapy--OR--

  3. Medullary carcinoma with metastases (spread) beyond the regional lymph nodes.

If you have your lymph nodes removed with radiation treatment and your cancer returns, you will also be approved.

Under 3 percent of all thyroid cancer patients will meet the Listing requirements.

If you do not meet or equal the Listing you must prove with medical evidence that your condition is otherwise so severe that it renders you unable to work at any full-time job for a continuous period of at least 12 months.

Claimants who are age 50 or over may have an easier time being approved for Social Security disability benefits.
