Despite what you may have heard or read here are some hard facts about Social Security Disability:

FACT: Social Security does not cover everyone. It only covers workers who have paid into the FICA system and earned enough work credits to be "insured." Most claimants need to have worked and paid FICA for 5 years out of the previous 10 years.

FACT: Social Security denies about 8 out of 10 new disability claims, including many good claims that should have been paid.

FACT: More claims get paid in the appeals process than in the application process.

FACT: Your best chance for approval comes at the hearing level before a federal Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).

FACT: It is nearly always better to appeal a denied claim than to file a new claim.

FACT: You are 3.3X more likely to be approved if you use a lawyer or experienced advocate to help with your disability claim: SOURCE: Study by the US Government, Government Accountability Office (GAO), 2016.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about Social Security disability. Much of this information consists of opinions from individuals who have no professional training or direct experience in Social Security disability. Follow that advice at your own risk.
