Beware when using the Internet for information about Social Security disability.

While there is a wealth of helpful information out there, there is also some misleading and just totally false information. Here's one example I came across the other day:

FROM THE INTERNET: "How much money can you have in the bank with Social Security disability? WHAT IS THE RESOURCE LIMIT? The limit for countable resources is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple"

CORRECT ANSWER: NONE. There is no resourse limit for Social Security Disability. A claimant may have unlimited money or other resources and still get Social Security disability because SSDI is not means tested or based on need.

The false information cited above does not refer to Social Security disability. It refers to Supplemental Security Income or SSI, which is not at all the same thing. An applicant for SSI is restricted to resources of $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple--because SSI is means tested.

A lot of people confuse SSI with "Social Security Insurance," which is incorrect. SSI is a type of welfare which helps aged or very needy people--thus,. of course, it has resource restrictions.

So the real question is: "How much money can you have in the bank with Social Security disability (SSDI)?" The Answer: There is no limit to how much you can have.
