Once you get disability payments started, how long can you receive them?

You may continue to receive disability payments until one of the following stops them:

  1. You improve medically to the point you are no longer disabled, OR

2. You reach full retirement age and your disability benefits automatically convert to an equal retirement benefit (no change in amount). You won't notice when this happens.

Social Security will probably perform a "Continuing Disability Review" (CDR) about every 3 years to determine if you are still medically disabled. Factors that can hurt you in a CDR include:

  • Not continuing with regular, consistent medical care (seeing your doctors).

  • Working, especially if you earn substantial wages (over about $1,200/month).

  • Postings on social media that make you appear to have an active, unrestricted lifestyle.

  • Failing to get your doctor to provide a written explanation that you have not achieved substantial medical improvement.

  • Failing or being late to appeal (in writing) any decision to stop your benefits.
