Social Security disabiliy (SSDI) can replace some of your wages lost due to a long-term disability. But, as everyone on disability knows, SSDI payments often don't cover all living expenses. Adjustments are necessary. I often hear beneficiaries say, "I am grateful for the disability payments I receive, but it's really hard to live on that amount of money."
Social Security was never intended to be enough to live on. It was intended to be a supplement to an individual's savings and other means. Unfortunately, too many of us haven't been able to save and Social Security is all we have to live on.
The average SSDI check in 2022 is around $1,200 per month.** Some are lower, some are much larger. It depends on your wage history.
So, what are some ways to survive on disability income?
Apply for additional assistance, such as food stamps or WIC. Or visit a local food pantry.
Start clipping coupons and shop for specials.
Look into assistance with electric bills. Check with your utility department.
Seek additional income sources. You may be able to work part-time and still get SSDI. Be sure you know the earnings limit or you may lose SSDI by earning too much, even with a part time job.
Look for income based housing, such as Section 8.
If you have a home mortgage check with "Hardest Hit Alabama."
** Social Security recipients are getting an increase of 8.7% starting January 2023. Millions of Americans will see an extra $100 to $150 on their Social Security checks.
