Contrary to popular belief, you cannot loose Social Security Disability (SSDI) benefit because you exceed a certain income or have too many assets. Those restrictions belong to SSI (Supplemental Security Income), not SSDI.
However, here are some things may cause your Social Security disability benefits to be stopped:
1. Going back to work. If you earn wages in excess of certain allowable amounts (due to "Substantial Gainful Activity), your SSDI benefits will be stopped. SSDI is paid because an individual is unable to work due to a medical disability. Self-employment may be considered "SGA," as well.
2. Medical Improvement. If your health improves to a point that you no longer meet Social Security's definition of "disabled," benefits may be stopped. Social Security conducts Continuing Disability Reviews about every 3 years to check on beneficiaries--to see if they are still disabled under their rules.
3. Being Incarcerated. The law does not permit an individual who is incarcerated in a jail or prison to receive disability benefits while incarcerated.
