If you are thinking about filing a new claim for Social Security Disabiity Insurance (SSDI) benefits, here are the simple basic things you need to have.
WORK CREDITS: Most individuals age 31 or over will need to have worked and earned at least 20 quarters of work coverage and at least 10 of those quarters should be within the 10 years prior to becoming disabled.
YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY WORKING: From the time you file your claim you must not be working at Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA). If you are working at SGA, you will get a Step 1, automatic denial. In 2025, you are working at SGA if your gross pay (earnings) is at least $1,620 per month. Working and earning this much money disqualifies you for SSDI.
MEDICAL EVIDENCE: You need treatment from medical and/or mental professionals to document your severe, disabling conditions. There should objective medical findings--such as laboratory studies, imaging studies or other tests--not just doctors' opinions.
DURATION: At least one of your severe conditions must have lasted or be expected to last for at least 12 straight months OR to end in death. Social Security will not pay for a disability that lasts less than a full 12 months.
PERSISTENCE: A majority of new claims will be denied. It will be important to appeal each denial within the 60 day time limit. You may have to go all the way to a hearing before an administrative law judge to get approved. In the appeal process, consider representation by a Social Security disability attorney or professional advocate to increase your odds.
