Since Social Security disability approval can take a year or longer and involve a complicated, frustrating appeal process, the question arises: Is it worth the fight?
Yes, it is. And for several reasons:
It may involve a lot of money. The average SSDI benefit in 2020 is approximately $1,250 per month or $15,000 per year. However, the maximum benefit is $3,011 per month. It is substantial money. If you calculate the benefits for the remainder of your life, the total may come to over $500,000.
2. There may be lump sum back pay coming to you which can catch up your bills, pay off your car or just provide substantial savings for future emergencies.
3. Social Security disability income can assure you have the basic necessities of life: housing, food, transportation, medical care, etc.
4. Your dependent children may also qualify for benefits, up to one-half of your award. This money assures a decent standard of living for your dependent children.
5. An SSDI award comes with Medicare insurance to pay for your medical care. It allows you to go to the doctor of your choice, get diagnostic tests that may otherwise be beyond your reach, cover hospitalizations and even pay for your prescription medications (with Part D added).
6. You have paid for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) all your working life. It Isn't welfare or a handout. You paid FICA tax on every dollar you earned during your working career. This is a tax the federal government collects (mandatory) to pay for Social Security and Medicare. Claim what you are entitled to get.
7. Waiting too long to apply may leave you out in the cold forever--because SSDI benefits expire over time after you stop working and paying FICA. Generally, you must file within 5 years of the date you stop working. This deadline can be different for different scenarios. But waiting is dangerous. Even if you medical condition worsens, you may not be able to file a claim if you wait too long.
8. Finally, with good legal representation, your part of the fight is not so intimidating. Your representative can handle many details and help you get your benefits. We try to keep most of the burden off your shoulders. And it will not cost you a cent to apply and appeal, if necessary. In short, you have a lot to gain and nothing to lose. Talk to a qualified disability advocate or attorney right away.
