UPS is a legitimate company with a good reputation.

However, scammers have seized the opportunity to use the UPS name to scam people out of money. The legitimate UPS company has nothing to do with these scams.

Scammers (criminals) will contact you via email. The scam may involve problems delivering a package, extra delivery fees due, or any variety of false pretenses. These scams usually ask for very personal information in order to deliver your "package." They may ask for your home address, phone number or bank or credit card information. Or the scammer may simply download a malware program to control your computer or iphone.

If you get an email from "UPS," the chances are 99 out of 100 that it's a scam. Don't even open the email because by doing so you may get infectious malware installed on your device that allows the scammer to access all your passwords, account information, etc.

If you have really ordered something and are expecting it to be delivered, log on to the legitimate shippers website to check delivery status. NEVER respond to an email. The real UPS will not email you to get your home address, your credit card information, or other sensitive information.

Why do I post this on my site which deals with Social Security disability? Many of our clients are older individuals or persons with disabilities. Unfortunately, that group is often targeted by scammers. We want our clients and readers to be aware of scams so you don't fall victim to something that could potentially take all your life's savings or cost you thousands of dollars in loss.

This is just one of the many scams out there--but it is a big one. When in doubt, just don't respond. Don't open that email or return that phone call. Get a family member or someone you trust to check it out first. It may save you a lot of heartache. Once money is lost to one of these scams, it is almost impossible to get it back. Scammers usually take the money (often from a foreign country) and disappear.

This is presented as a public service. We hate scammers.
