You may automatically qualify for Social Security disability benefits if you have a condition that is on the list of Compassionate Allowances:

Another way to automatically qualify is to meet or equal all of the requirements of a Listing in the Social Security Blue Book.

Generally an individual with a terminal illness will qualify automatically.

Only about 1 percent of all disability awards will come from one of the above categories, however.

Most claimants will need to take a longer and more difficult path to getting benefits. This will involve submitting detailed medical evidence that a medical condition is so severe that it precludes all substantial gainful activity (SGA) or full-time work.

An experienced attorney may use a Medical-Vocational Guideline or "grid rule" to direct a finding of disability.
