2021 brings a few changes to Social Security disability.

Benefit payments are up about $30 per month on average due to a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).

The threshold for "Significant Gainful Activity" (SGA) has been raised from $1,260 to $1,310. This means if you work and earn less than $1,310 per month in 2021, your work does not restrict you from applying for disability benefits.

Hearings with judges will continue to be by telephone conference call in 2021. No in-person hearings are being held. There is a move to transition to video conference calls but we don't know exactly when that will happen....probably in a few months.

The hearing backlog has been whittled down, so hearings can occur with only a few months of waiting. Your interests will be still be best served in 2021 if you get an experienced lawyer/representative to assist with your Social Security claim.
