When should you hire an attorney if trying to get disability benefits? The sooner the better.
Here are the reasons to get an attorney:
Claimants who use an attorney are 3 times more likely to be approved.
It costs nothing up front to get an attorney; nothing out of pocket.
There is no attorney's fee unless you win and receive back pay.
Any attorney's fee will be directly paid out of Social Security back pay.
Waiting to hire an attorney saves no money, since the fee is based on a percentage of the back pay you recover, not on how long the attorney works on the case.
If you case goes to court (and most do) your attorney is already familiar with your claim.
Three-fourths of all Social Security claims will end up in court, at least before a judge for a hearing. You don't want to go there alone. Furthermore, all the statements, evidence and forms that you made will follow you to the hearing. An attorney will review and approve all of those before they are submitted, thus preventing problems further down the road.
Social Security cases are built--one piece at a time. There are many steps. An error at any step can cause real problems. To make sure everything is done correctly, get professional help early.
