Here are things most people don't know about Social Security:
It is a federal insurance program, not an entitlement, benefit or hand out.
It is mandatory; you cannot opt out of it if you work.
No tax money is used to pay Social Security benefits.
Social Security has 2 trust funds: Retirement and Disability--both paid for by tax on workers' earnings (payroll deduction, called FICA).
Not everyone is covered by Social Security--only those who have worked recently.
You can earn up to 4 work credits for a year of work (1 credit per calendar quarter).
Most people need a minimum of 20 work credits for a disability claim.
You lose work credits if you don't work for a few years (They expire).
Disabled claimants usually need an attorney to get their benefits.
There are several very different programs handled by the Social Security Administration; 2 that often get confused are SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance). They sound alike but are very different.
